Simple Ways to ways essay, Assess the Writing Skills of Students with Learning Disabilities. Student writing can be evaluated on five product factors: fluency, content, conventions, syntax, and vocabulary. Writing samples also should be assessed across a variety of purposes for writing to essay on why like to be, give a complete picture of a student's writing performance across different text structures and genres. These simple classroom help in identifying strengths and weaknesses, planning instruction, evaluating instructional activities, giving feedback, monitoring performance, and reporting progress. Simple ways to look techniques, assess the writing skills of students with learning disabilities. A teacher's first responsibility is to provide opportunities for writing and letter of intent the same as a personal, encouragement for techniques students who attempt to write. A teacher's second responsibility is to promote students' success in writing. The teacher does this by carefully monitoring students' writing to assess strengths and weaknesses, teaching specific skills and strategies in response to essay rubric 6th grade, student needs, and giving careful feedback that will reinforce newly learned skills and correct recurring problems.

These responsibilities reveal, upon inspection, that assessment is clearly an integral part of good instruction. In their review of the look, existing research on effective instruction Christenson, Ysseldyke, and as level essays, Thurlow (1989) found that, in addition to other factors, the following conditions were positively correlated to pupil achievement: The degree to which there is an appropriate instructional match between student characteristics and essay techniques, task characteristics (in other words, teachers must assess the student's prior knowledge and current level of skills in order to match them to argument rubric, a task that is relevant and appropriate to their aptitudes); The degree to which the teacher actively monitors students' understanding and progress; and The degree to which student performance is evaluated frequently and appropriately (congruent with what is both ways on film techniques, taught). Assessment, therefore, is an essential component of effective instruction. Coursework In Quality? Airasian (1996) identified three types of classroom assessments. The first he called sizing-up assessments, usually done during the first week of school to provide the teacher with quick information about the students when beginning their instruction.

The second type, instructional assessments, are used for the daily tasks of ways, planning instruction, giving feedback, and argument 6th grade, monitoring student progress. Look Both Ways Essay Techniques? The third type he referred to as official assessments, which are the periodic formal functions of assessment for grouping, grading, and reporting. In other words, teachers use assessment for identifying strengths and weaknesses, planning instruction to fit diagnosed needs, evaluating instructional activities, giving feedback, monitoring performance, and reporting progress. Simple curriculum-based methods for assessing written expression can meet all these purposes. Curriculum-based assessment must start with an inspection of the curriculum. Many writing curricula are based on a conceptual model that takes into account process, product, and purpose. This conceptual model, therefore, forms the framework for the simple assessment techniques that follow. Simple ways to assess the on why i would, process. The diagnostic uses of assessment (determining the look ways on film techniques, reasons for writing problems and the student's instructional needs) are best met by argumentative pro choice looking at look ways techniques, the process of writing, i.e., the steps students go through and strategies they use as they work at writing.

How much planning does the student do before he or she writes? Does she have a strategy for organizing ideas? What seem to be the obstacles to getting thoughts down on paper? How does the student attempt to spell words she does not know? Does the student reread what she has written? Does the help with college application essay, student talk about or share her work with others as she is writing it? What kind of ways on film, changes does the student make to her first draft? In order to make instructionally relevant observations, the observer must work from a conceptual model of like, what the writing process should be. Educators have reached little consensus regarding the number of steps in the writing process.

Writing experts have proposed as few as two (Elbow, 1981) and look both essay techniques, as many as nine (Frank, 1979). Englert, Raphael, Anderson, Anthony, and to be, Stevens (1991) provided a model of a five-step writing process using the acronym POWER: Plan, Organize, Write, Edit, and Revise. Look On Film Techniques? Each step has its own substeps and strategies that become more sophisticated as the coursework in quality, students become more mature as writers, accommodating their style to specific text structures and purposes of writing. Assessment of the both ways, writing process can be done through observation of students as they go through the steps of writing. Having students assess their own writing process is also important for two reasons.

First, self-assessment allows students an opportunity to observe and reflect on their own approach, drawing attention to important steps that may be overlooked. Second, self-assessment following a conceptual model like POWER is a means of internalizing an explicit strategy, allowing opportunities for the student to mentally rehearse the strategy steps. Figure 1 is a format for both self-observation and teacher observation of the as level essays, writing process following the POWER strategy. Similar self-assessments or observation checklists could be constructed for other conceptual models of the writing process. ____did the best I could. ____looked in look ways essay on film, a book. ____asked my partner. ____asked the teacher.

Simple ways to assess the product. An effective writing process should lead to a successful product. A writing product fulfills its communicative intent if it is of appropriate length, is argument essay 6th grade, logical and coherent, and has a readable format. On Film? It is a pleasure to read if it is composed of well-constructed sentences and a rich variety of words that clearly convey the author's meaning. Argument? When various conceptual models of writing are compared side by side (Isaacson, 1984) five product variables seem to emerge: fluency, content, conventions, syntax, and vocabulary. Too often teachers focus their attention primarily on surface features of a student's composition related to the mechanical aspects of writing, or conventions. Look Ways On Film Techniques? A balanced assessment should look at essay rubric 6th grade, all five aspects of a student's writing.

The following are simple methods for essay techniques assessing each product variable. In some instances quantifiable measures are used; in others, qualitative assessments seem more appropriate. The first writing skill a teacher might assess with a beginning writer is fluency: being able to translate one's thoughts into on abortion pro choice, written words. As concepts of print and fine motor skills develop, the student should become more proficient at writing down words and look both on film techniques, sentences into compositions of gradually increasing length. The developmental route of very young writers involves trying to understand what written language is about as they look at personal statement, books, become aware of environmental print, and put pencil to paper (Clay, 1982). Then children try to relate their experiences in writing using invented spelling. As they begin to construct little stories they explore spelling patterns and develop new language patterns. Clay (1979, 1993) recommends a simple rating scale for emerging writing skills that focuses on language level (from only letters to sentences and paragraphs), message quality, and directional principles (Figure 2). 2. Word (any recognizable word) 3. Word group (any two-word phrase)

4. Sentence (any simple sentence) 5. Punctuated story (of two or more sentences) 6. Paragraphed story (two themes) 1. He has a concept of signs (uses letters, invents letters, used punctuation. 2. Look Ways Essay On Film Techniques? He has a concept that a message is conveyed. 3. A message is copied. 4. Repetitive use of sentence patterns such as Here is a… 5. Attempts to record own ideas. 6. Successful composition. 1. No evidence of directional knowledge.

2. Part of the directional pattern is known: start top left, move left to right, or return down left. 3. Reversal of the directional pattern (right to history, left and return down right) 4. Correct directional pattern. 5. Both Ways Techniques? Correct directional pattern and spaces between words. 6. Extensive text without any difficulties of of intent statement, arrangement and spacing of text. A simple curriculum-based measure of fluency is look both essay on film, total number of words written during a short writing assignment. When fluency is the focus, misspellings, poor word choice, and faulty punctuation are not considered. Attention is only directed to the student's facility in translating thoughts into words. Essay To Be? A baseline of at least three writing samples should be collected and look, the total number of words counted for each. For the purpose of evaluation, this total can be compared with those of proficient writers of the same age or grade level. However, total words may be used best in help application, monitoring the student's progress, comparing performance with his or her own previous fluency.

A resulting IEP objective might be written like this: After a group prewriting discussion with the teacher, Daniel will write original narrative compositions of [40] words or more. A rough guideline for setting the both ways essay on film, criterion can be established from research reported by Deno, Mirkin, and Wesson (1984) and is a of intent the same as a, Parker and Tindal (1989): If the total number of words is less than 20, aim for doubling it by the end of the school year. If the number of words is between 25 and 30, aim for a 50% increase. If the look both essay on film techniques, number of like to be, words is between 35 and 45, aim for a 25% increase. If the number of words is greater than 50, choose another objective. Content is the second factor to look on film techniques, consider in the writing product. Content features include the history essays, composition's organization, cohesion, accuracy (in expository writing), and originality (in creative writing). General questions the look both ways essay on film, classroom teacher can ask regarding a composition's organization include: Is there a good beginning sentence?

Is there a clear ending? Is there a logical sequence of subtopics or events? Cohesion questions include: Does the writer stick to the topic? Is it clear what words like it, that, and they refer to? Does the writer use key words that cue the reader to the direction of the discourse (First… , Then… , Therefore… , On the other hand… )? Originality is assessed through questions like: Did the writer attempt humor? Did the writer present a unique point of view? Analytical scales are the best way to lend some objectivity to evaluation of of intent, content. One can choose from a general rating scale, appropriate to look on film techniques, almost any writing assignment, or one tailored to a specific genre or text structure. Spandel and Culham (1993) developed an analytical trait scoring guide for argumentative essay on abortion pro choice six aspects of both ways essay on film, writing, three of coursework in quality, which address content: Ideas and on film, content, organization, and voice. (Voice refers to the author's own unique personality, style, and honesty reflected in the writing.) Each of these traits is scored on a five-point scale. For example, organization is scored using the following guidelines: 5 The organization enhances and showcases the central idea or storyline.

The order, structure or presentation of argument 6th grade, information is both essay techniques, compelling and moves the is a as a personal, reader through the text. 3 The organizational structure is strong enough to move the reader through the text without undue confusion 1 The writing lacks a clear sense of direction. Ideas, details or events seem strung together in a loose or random fashion-or else there is no identifiable internal structure. Look Ways? (Spandel Culham, 1993) To promote agreement between raters, each of the guidelines above is further defined by specific criteria (or rubrics). A rating of is a the same, 3, for example, requires these attributes:

The paper has a recognizable introduction and conclusion. The introduction may not create a strong sense of anticipation; the both essay techniques, conclusion may not tie up all loose ends. Sequencing is usually logical, but may sometimes be so predictable that the structure takes attention away from the content. Pacing is fairly well controlled, though the writer sometimes spurts ahead too quickly or spends too much time on details that do not matter. Transitions often work well; at argumentative essay pro choice, other times, connections between ideas are fuzzy.

The organization sometimes supports the main point or storyline; at other times, the reader feels an look ways, urge to slip in a transition or move things around. (Spandel Culham, 1993) A composition that is somewhat better organized than described by the guidelines for 3 but does not quite fit the descriptors for 5 would receive a rating of 4. Similarly, a rating of 2 falls between the descriptors for 1 and 3. Analytical scoring guidelines such as these are used in many state writing assessments. There are two limitations to scales such as these. First, teachers must spend many hours learning the rubrics and discussing student compositions in help write application essay great, order to establish any degree of integrater reliability.

Second, these scales may not be sensitive enough to measure growth in students with emerging literacy skills who are unable to achieve a rating above 1 or-at the most-2. For many students, writing instruction begins with smaller units of ways, discourse, such as a paragraph. Welch and college great, Link (1992) recommended an look both essay on film, informal paragraph assessment that focuses on each of a paragraph's three parts: topic sentence, supporting sentences, and help with great, clincher sentence (Figure 3). Both Essay Techniques? Each part can receive a point for the same personal its existence, its form (grammatical correctness), and look both, its function (relevance to the topic). Both topic sentence and clincher sentence can earn only on why i would one point for each of the three criteria, but up to three supporting sentences can be scored for existence, form, and function. This scale could be used to evaluate almost any kind of paragraph. Source: Welch, M. Both Ways Essay? Link, D.P. (1992) Informal assessment of paragraph composition. Intervention in rubric, School and Clinic, 27(3), 145-149. The large cactus you see in pictures the both essay on film techniques, desert is saguaro cactus. The Squaro cactus is very painfull if you toutch it. But it isn't as painful as being stabbed with a knife.

It is against the law kill saguaros in the desert. I have seen som with about help with write essay great therty arms. Writing instruction for students with special needs also may focus on specific text structures. An example of a structure-specific scale is one that Isaacson (1995) devised for evaluating factual paragraphs written by middle school students (Figure 4). Both Essay Techniques? Isaacson's scale reflects the conceptual definition of fact paragraphs taught to the students: (a) A fact paragraph has more than one sentence; (b) The first sentence tells the topic; (c) All other sentences are about the history as level, topic; (d) Sentences tell facts, not opinions; and (e) The most important information is given first. Judgments of factual accuracy and fact vs. opinion make the scale specific to factual paragraphs.

1 = Some facts are questionable (content not covered in source material. 2 = All facts seem accurate. 1 = Sufficient information is provided. 1 = Some improvement possible. 2 = Clear, logical order. Harris and Graham (1992) provided another example of a structure-explicit measure for assessing the inclusion and quality of eight story elements in stories written by students with learning disabilities: introduction of the main character, description of the locale, the ways essay techniques, time in which the story takes place, a precipitating event (or starter event), the goal formulated by the character in response to the starter event, action(s) carried out in an attempt to achieve the goal, the ending result, and essays, the final reaction of the main character to the outcome.

Each story element receives a numerical score for its inclusion and quality of development. On Film Techniques? The validity of the scale was demonstrated by its correlation with Thematic Maturity scores on the Test of on why to be, Written Language and holistic ratings of look both ways essay techniques, story quality (Graham Harris, 1986). A resulting IEP objective for in quality content might read: Using a story map, John will plan, write, and look both ways on film techniques, revise a story which includes a description of the character, setting, problem or goal, two or more events, and conclusion. (A story map is a planning sheet that prompts students to think about and write down their ideas concerning the character, setting, and other components of a good story before they write.) In order to fulfill the communicative function of coursework in quality, writing, the product must be readable. Writers are expected to follow the standard conventions of written English: correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar and both ways on film, legible handwriting. Consequently, even if the message is communicated, readers tend to be negatively predisposed to compositions that are not presentable in their form or appearance. Teachers traditionally have been more strongly influenced by length of paper, spelling, word usage, and in quality, appearance than by look essay techniques appropriateness of content or organization (Charney, 1984; Moran, 1982). Counting correct word sequences is one quantitative method of argument, measuring and monitoring students' use of look both ways essay, conventions.

Correct word sequences (CWS) are two adjacent, correctly spelled words that are grammatically acceptable within the context of the phrase (Videen, Deno, Marston, 1982). Capitalization and punctuation also can be considered within the sequence. To calculate the proportion of CWS: Place a caret (^) over every correct sequence between the two words that form the argumentative pro choice, sequence. Place a large dot between every incorrect sequence. Place dots before and look both essay on film techniques, after misspelled words. Example: o my ^ dog o chasd o the ^ ball^. The first sequence is not comprised of two words but marks how the sentence was begun. (Sentence beginning to first word my is marked as an incorrect sequence because the argument essay 6th grade, M is not capitalized.) The last sequence is the last word to period, question mark, or other appropriate ending punctuation.

To control for length of composition either (a) time the look both essay techniques, writing sample for on why to be 3 minutes (the student may continue writing after a mark is made indicating the last word written in the 3-minute period) and/or (b) divide the number of both ways, CWS by the total number of sequences (correct and incorrect), which gives the proportion of argumentative on abortion pro choice, CWS. Proportion of correct word sequences, however, does not in both ways on film, itself pinpoint specific concerns about the student's spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, or handwriting. The diagnostic function of assessment will only be met if the teacher also notes the essay, student's strengths and weaknesses as in Figure 5. About Sell My Cow. I go to the Ranch at 5:30 in morning. I Ride my Horse with My Dad. get my Cow in the Barn. I Leave My cow and Calf. My DaD gave Shot to Calf. We took My Calf to Downtown. My fReind ride my horse.

My horse is Black. My freind have red horse. But I need my cow to Born in feB 1st 1992. I am sell my Cow to calf for town But I have fun in Ranch in town. But I Like my money Back to for sell my Calf. But I need money Back to both techniques, me. My Dad Siad no money back now Wait to on why i would like, little to look both ways essay on film techniques, me. Like the letter the same as a personal statement, other assessments discussed in this article, these methods can be useful for look on film techniques instructional planning. Is A Of Intent Personal? A resulting IEP objective addressing conventions, for example, might read: Using a 4-step editing strategy, Kevin will reread his composition checking for correct capitals, punctuation, spelling, and overall appearance, writing a final draft with 2 or less mechanical errors. As discussed previously, a child's early attempts at look both essay techniques, writing move from writing single words to as level, writing word groups and sentences (Clay, 1993).

Beginning writers often produce sentences that follow a repeated subject-verb (S-V) or subject-verb-object (S-V-O) pattern. The composition in Figure 5 was written by a ten-year-old female deaf student. Techniques? The beginning of the composition reveals this typical repetitious pattern to essay i would, a certain degree in its first few sentences: I go… I Ride my Horse… [I] get my Cow… I Leave My cow… A more mature writer will vary the sentence pattern and look essay on film, combine short S-V and S-V-O sentences into longer, more complex sentences. Powers and Wilgus (1983) examined three parameters of syntactic maturity: (a) variations in the use of coursework, sentence patterns, (b) first expansions (six basic sentence patterns formed by both ways the addition of adverbial phrases, infinitives, and object complements, and the formation of simple compound sentences), and coursework, (c) transformations that result in both ways essay techniques, relative and subordinate clauses. Adapting Power and Wilgus's analysis of patterns suggests a simple schema for evaluating the syntactic maturity of a student's writing: Fragment : A group of essay on why i would like, words that does not make a complete sentence. Examples: His old shirt. Nina and Fred too. Level 1 Repetitious use of a single pattern (simple sentences)

Example: I like my horse. I like my dog. I like my kitty. I like to feed my kitty. Level 2 Use of ways, a variety of simple sentence patterns. Examples: I have a new toy. (S-V-O) It is big. Essay Like? (S-Vbe -Adj) It came in the mail. (S-V-PP) Level 3 First expansions: (a) addition of an adverbial or gerund phrase, or (b) the making of a compound sentence by combining two simple sentences with the word and.

Examples: Our baby sitter sleeps all the time. To go faster, we push it. I ate the cookie and my brother ate the candy bar. Level 4 Complex sentences (transformations in which one sentence is embedded within another as a subordinate clause) Examples: The man wants to live where there is no pollution. Since John was late, we had to ways essay on film techniques, start without him.

Seldom does a student write sentences at is a as a, only one level of look on film techniques, syntactic maturity. One determines a syntactic level by analyzing all the sentences in the sample and essay 6th grade, summarizing them according to look ways on film, the type most often used. Occasionally one might characterize a student's syntactic level as being a transitional Level 2/Level 3 or Level 3/Level 4. A resulting IEP objective for syntax might read: Daniel will plan, write, and revise a descriptive paragraph using mature sentences, at essay on why like, least half containing embedded clauses or adverbial phrases. The words used in a student's composition can be evaluated according to the uniqueness or maturity of the words used in the composition. Both quantitative and qualitative methods can be used to evaluate vocabulary.

Quantitative methods include calculating the use of unrepeated words in relation to the total number of words, such as Morris and ways essay on film, Crump's (1982) corrected type-token ratio. History As Level Essays? A simpler classroom-based method of looking at vocabulary is to ways essay on film, simply make note of is a the same as a, words used repetitiously (over-used words) as well as new and mature words the student uses. Example: Over-Used Words: New Mature Words. A resulting IEP objective for vocabulary might read: Diana will revise her expository compositions, substituting at least five over-used words (e.g., is) for more interesting action words. Being skilled is ways essay, not just knowing how to perform some action but also knowing when to perform it and adapt it to coursework in quality, varied circumstances (Resnick Klopfer, 1989, p. 4). Being a skilled writer requires knowing how to ways essay, employ the writing process across a range of writing tasks and adapt the process to the specific purpose for rubric writing. Instruction often begins with story structures because they represent the techniques, genre most familiar to children.

Children also use and depend upon narrative as their principal mode of thinking (Moffett, 1983). However, several educators (Hennings, 1982; Sinatra, 1991; Stotsky, 1984) have called for more emphasis on of intent statement, descriptive and look both ways on film, expository text structures which relate more closely to real life writing tasks. Different purposes for writing call for different text structures. Writing a story calls for a narrative text structure that includes a character, setting, problem, etc. Writing about one's beliefs calls for a persuasive text structure that includes discussion of the problem, statement of belief, two or three reasons for the belief, facts and examples that support the reasons, etc. Assessment of essay on why i would, writing skills, therefore, should take into account a variety of purposes and both essay on film techniques, text structures. Purposes and genres to consider include: personal narrative (my trip to the state fair), story narrative, descriptive, explanation of a process (how to give your dog a bath), factual report, letter, compare-contrast (compare the the same personal, Allegheny Mountains with the Rocky Mountains), and persuasive. Simple curriculum-based assessments can be used to look ways essay on film techniques, assess the writing process and products of students with learning disabilities, as well as take into account purpose. Argument Rubric 6th Grade? The assessments recommended in this article also adequately fulfill the purposes of look ways essay on film techniques, assessment as discussed at the beginning of the article: identifying strengths and weaknesses, planning instruction to of intent personal statement, fit diagnosed needs, evaluating instructional activities, giving feedback, monitoring performance, and reporting progress.

The process checklist in both on film, Figure 1 gives the teacher important diagnostic information about the strategies a student does or does not use when writing. The teacher then should use the initial assessment to essay on why to be, identify instructional targets. Look Both On Film? Some students, for example, may do pretty well at i would like, planning their composition, but do little in the way of effective editing. Other students may have creative ideas, but need considerable work on conventions. Look Both Ways On Film? Some students may do pretty well with writing stories, but need to learn how to write factual paragraphs.

All classroom-based assessment should involve the coursework in quality, student. Self-assessment helps students take ownership for ways on film techniques their own writing and helps them internalize the strategies they are learning. The teacher's feedback should be given judiciously: generous in the encouragement of ideas and improved skills, but cautious in correction. Corrective feedback should only focus on those few skill targets that have been addressed in instruction. Simple classroom-based methods also can be used to in quality, monitor student performance and report progress. Figure 6 is an assessment summary sheet that could be used to give a profile of a student's skills across a variety of writing purposes and genres. In an assessment portfolio the summary sheet would be accompanied by look ways essay representative samples of a student's writing with both the student's and teacher's evaluations. After an initial assessment of student strengths and weakness across fluency, content, conventions, syntax, and vocabulary, the teacher would not necessarily need to monitor all the product factors, just those that focus on the student's greatest challenges and with college application essay, priority instructional objectives. In conclusion, on-going assessment of writing is integral to effective teaching of writing. A teacher cannot make an appropriate instructional match between a student's skills and appropriate tasks without assessment. Both Ways Essay On Film? Look Both Ways: Approaching the essays

5 Tips for Creating a Photo Essay with a Purpose. As a photographer, you are a storyteller. The nouns are your subject matter; the verbs are the color and contrast that keep the story moving. A cast of look ways, characters all working together to history essays get your point across. Instead of proper grammar, you ensure proper exposure. Instead of spelling errors, you watch for tack-sharp focus. For those times when the story is especially important and meaningful, or for when one image doesn’t say it all, there is the photographic essay. With blogging and social media, photo essays are more popular than ever: humorous or emotionally relevant, sparking debate or encouraging compassion, each with a story to tell. I’ve mentioned before that taking on ways essay techniques a photo project is one of letter the same as a personal, my favorite ways to reignite my love for look both ways photography, but beyond that, it’s a great way to get your message across and on why like to be have your work seen by both ways on film techniques a larger group. Letter Of Intent As A? A photo essay is intriguing; it’s something to look both essay techniques talk about essay on abortion pro choice, after people hear that you’re a photographer and want to know about the on film techniques, glitz and glamour of it all.

It’s the perfect thing to help with college great tell them after you’re done going on and on about all of the red carpets, the celebrities, the fame, and both essay on film the fortune. It also can be extremely satisfying and kick-start your creative wonderment. By definition, a photographic essay is a set or series of photographs intended to essay tell a story or evoke emotions. It can be only both ways essay on film techniques images, images with captions, or images with full text. Is A Letter As A Statement? In short, it can be almost anything you want it to be. Which is where I struggle mostwhen the look ways essay, options are limitless.

In this freelance world we live in, I love a little guidance, a little direction. Coursework? Ideally, someone to ways essay tell me exactly what they want and promise to be thrilled with whatever I produce, for my fragile artist ego can’t take any less. While I continue my quest for that, I offer you these 5 tips for creating your own, completely without bounds, photographic essay: Each time I’ve had a very specific concept in mind before I started shooting, it’s never been the end result. Argumentative On Abortion? An example: for a hot minute, I offered a “day in the life” session to my clients. I was photographing so many of the same clients year after year that I wanted to be able to offer them a different spin on the portrait sessions I was doing for them. I asked a long-time client if her family could be my guinea pigs for this and told them that we could do whatever they wanted. We went out for ice cream, had a mini dance party in their living room, and I photographed a tooth that had been lost that very morning. Then, very last, I photographed the two young daughters with notes they had written, which to be honest, I’m not even sure how they had come about. Both Ways On Film? I rushed home after the session and letter personal statement edited those last note pictures first just because they were so different from both ways essay what I usually shoot, and posted them on my personal Facebook page the heading Notes Girls Write . Is A Of Intent The Same As A? Within minutes a dear friend, and fellow photographer, commented that this was big. Bigger than just the look on film, two pictures.

She and I would spend the next year working on a photo essay that became a blog, that in turn became a book entitled Notes Girls Write . We photographed hundreds of women of all ages with their notes, each one later expressing having their portrait taken with their own words was an extremely powerful moment for them. Beyond my beautiful children, the fact that I can make a bed with hospital corners like no one’s business, and the award I won in the 4th grade for “Most Patient”, Notes Girls Write is one of history essays, my proudest accomplishments. It evolved on its own, starting from a few similar photographs that struck a cord in viewers and becoming a large and powerful project, one of the biggest markers in my career so far. TIP: Don’t be so set in both techniques, your idea that your project can’t outgrow your original concept. Your images will guide you to your end result, which may end up being different than you originally envisioned it. 2) If you think there’s something there, there’s likely something there. For the last year I have been a “foster mom” with a dog rescue group.

Volunteers transport dogs that would otherwise be put down from overpopulated shelters, or seized from essay terrible situations, to my area, where dog adoption rates are much higher. Ways Techniques? These dogs live in foster homes while they receive medical care and basic training so that they can be adopted out to coursework in quality loving homes. It’s incredibly rewarding. Especially when I had hardwood floors. I knew from the first time I met the transport van I wanted to document what it looked like: a van full of dogs that just narrowly escaped death arriving to temporary homes where they will experience a level of love and care which they’ve likely never known. Both Ways Essay Techniques? I tear-up every time I see it. As Level? I am also put to work every time I am there, so taking photos while holding onto a 100 pound German Shepard is tough. It’s going to look essay take me several trips to have enough images to letter the same as a personal statement do anything with, but that’s fine. I have no idea what I will be doing with these photos. I know they will find a home somewhere: maybe with the rescue group to raise awareness, or to help bring in volunteers, or maybe they will do nothing more than document my own story with volunteering, or perhaps something more.

I’m not sure yet, but the point is that I have the images, ready for both techniques their time, whenever that is. TIP: If you think there is something to on why like to be it, there likely is. Even if it’s just a personal passion project. Take photos until you find the direction or purpose and save them until your essay takes shape. You may not end up using all, or any of the images, but in continuing to take photographs, your project will be defined. I’m the both essay techniques, “World’s Worst Over-Shooter”. Need one image? Let me take a hundred so we know we have it. Luckily for my bad habit, the photographic essay needs over shooting.

Whether you know what your plan is, or have no idea want your end result will look like, the more coverage you have, the better. This is help with application great, one of the look ways, few times I push my luck and ask my subjects to work for me until they never want to see me again (I only photograph people though, so if you are photographing mountains or something, you have the added advantage of not pushing people until they cry or yell). Don’t be shy. Shoot everything you know you don’t need, just in case you need it. Letter The Same As A Statement? Should your end product need supporting images or take a different direction than you originally thought, you’ll be ready.

Take advantage of digital (if that’s how you shoot) and fill a memory card. You may end up trashing everything, or you may not. Look On Film? I had no idea that my Notes Girls Write project would span for as long as it did, but because I didn’t turn down anyone who was interested in the very beginning I ended up with some shots that told complete stories and expanded on the original concept. TIP: Think big. Help With Write Application Essay? If you are shooting an essay where mountains are your subject matter, see the mountain in pieces and photograph the surrounding trees, rocks, and whatever else. This will save you having to look both ways essay techniques return to the beginning of the project for supporting shots, or having to reshoot if your essay takes a different turn than you planned. 4) Ask for help with image selection. Coursework? I struggle with this oneI let my personal feelings get involved. Throughout our Notes Girls Write project I was constantly picking images based on my personal feelingsthe subjects that I had connected with more, and the girls that I knew were most interested in the project. This is where it is so helpful to both essay techniques have someone else help. Someone who has no personal feelings towards the help with write college, images and look essay techniques will help you pick based only on the strength of the image and coursework not your own feelings.

Even if people were not involved as subjects, you tend to have personal feelings toward images that the both ways, general public may not see the is a the same as a, power behind. I recently photographed several dozen sexual assault survivors as part of look essay, a photographic essay for a victim advocacy’s annual gallery show. This event is meant to put faces on the survivors and raise awareness, and has been a large local event for years. Essays? I was thrilled to be selected to be the exclusive photographer, though this was one of the hardest projects I’ve ever taken on. Both On Film Techniques? The photo sessions themselves, whether five minutes or 30, were extremely emotional for the survivors and in the time I spent with them, I often learned a lot about history, their journey and experience. This made it difficult for me to techniques pick which final images would be used for the show, based only on the power of the argument rubric 6th grade, image and not my personal feelings. In the end several select friends helped me narrow each survivor’s images down, and the subjects themselves selected which would be the final image used, as ultimately this is their story. TIP: All creative work is look both ways on film techniques, personal, and looking at photographs we take ourselves is incredibly hard to do with clear eyes. Argument 6th Grade? We see the mistakes, the look essay on film techniques, personal feelings, the shot that could have been better.

It’s impossible to always set these aside so when working on a project that is incredibly important to you, or large in essay on abortion pro choice, scale. Have others help you decide what images to use for your final pieces. Both? Bring in people who are interested in argument rubric 6th grade, photography and on film techniques people that aren’t. People that know about your subject matter and people that don’t understand it at as a statement, all. But above all, bring in people who will be honest and not tip-toe around your feelings. Lastly, also bring a thick skin. 5) Tell your story, in look essay, fact shout it from the rooftops if you can. Maybe your original idea for your photographic essay was to post it on your blog. Awesome, nothing wrong with that, but are you sure it can’t be more? Shop it around, who can it help?

Does this benefit a group, an organization, or a person? Could it inspire people? If you feel passionately about the photos, chances are that someone else will too. Your photographic eye doesn’t stop when your shooting is done. If you felt compelled to take the as level, time to create a photographic essay, there are likely “readers” for your story. Both Ways? TIP: This isn’t the time to be humble. Taking on a photo essay is a large endeavour. While there’s nothing wrong with having it be something you only did for argument rubric 6th grade your own personal growth, showing it around can be helpful both in experience and both ways longterm benefit. Post it on social media, find appropriate places your essay could be displayed, and think about how it helped you. Every single photo essay I have done has led to an outstanding connection, or more work, and there is nothing wrong with getting those things along with the personal gain of accomplishing something you’re proud of.

The ideas are truly for a photographic essay are limitless. Truly. Want a few more ideas for argument essay rubric 6th grade projects, try these? Have you ever done a photographic essay? This is the main reason why I think a blog is a much more interesting format than a photo sharing site such as flickr or 500px to help with write application show your work; for me, the images are just part of the both on film, story, but the words and write application essay texts can help define them, giving them context and body. I never expected to gain any new insight into the nature of my generation, or the changing landscape of both ways essay on film techniques American colleges, in Lit Theory. Lit Theory is supposed to be the class where you sit at the back of the room with every other jaded sophomore wearing skinny jeans, thick-framed glasses, an ironic tee-shirt and over-sized retro headphones, just waiting for lecture to be over so you can light up a Turkish Gold and walk to lunch while listening to write college application, Wilco. Look Ways On Film Techniques? That’s pretty much the way I spent the course, too: through structuralism, formalism, gender theory, and as level essays, post-colonialism, I was far too busy shuffling through my iPod to look ways essay on film, see what the patriarchal world order of 6th grade capitalist oppression had to do with Ethan Frome.

But when we began to study postmodernism, something struck a chord with me and made me sit up and look anew at the seemingly blase college-aged literati of which I was so self-consciously one. Oh, the hand wringing. “College as America used to look both essay, understand it is essay rubric coming to an end,” bemoans Rick Perlstein and his beatnik friend of fallen face. Those days, man, when a pretentious reading list was all it took to ways essay on film techniques, lift a child from suburbia. When jazz riffs hung in the dorm lounge air with the smoke of a thousand bongs, and college really mattered. Really mattered? Rick Perlstein thinks so.

It mattered so much to him that he never got over his four years at the University of Privilege. So he moved back to live in letter of intent the same as a personal statement its shadow, like a retired ballerina taking a seat in both ways essay the stalls. But when the curtain went up he saw students working and studying and working some more. Adults before their time. Today, at the University of Privilege, the history, student applies with a Curriculum Vitae not a book list. Look Both Essay Techniques? Shudder. Frankie Thomas , is a junior majoring in cinema-television critical studies, with a minor in gender studies.

Her immediate plans include dropping out at the end of the year to write and/or travel. She is a film maker and a blogger, with interests ranging from the on why i would like to be, social history of the Victorian era to birdwatching to look both ways techniques, the novels of Dawn Powell. I had the kind of college experience most people only dream about. Charged by the atmosphere of intellectual exploration, inspired by professors who pushed me farther than I’d ever imagined I could go, I made fascinating new friends at Skidmore; together we discovered Nabokov and Kafka, Citizen Kane and Dr. Strangelove, and our own literary voices.

It was a three-week summer program. I was fifteen. Now I’m twenty, halfway toward graduating from history as level University of Southern California, and if I had a thousand dollars for every college student I know who Struggles With Depression…well, I still wouldn’t have enough money to pay my full tuition. Look Ways On Film? But it would keep me going for a semester or two, assuming I didn’t lose my own struggle and drop listlessly out. As our SATs would have put it, “depression” is to argumentative essay on abortion pro choice, “college campus” as “consumption” is to “Victorian orphanage,” and ours is a generation of wheezing waifs.

Max Lance , 23, is a freshman at ways on film, USC’s School of in quality Cinematic Arts, majoring in writing for film and television. Ways On Film Techniques? He hopes to make his mark either with a “life-changing TV show” or by history as level essays, “marrying someone rich.” When I dropped out of ways essay college three years ago I would have completely agreed that college isn’t the cultural experience that it was hyped up to be. As I return this September, I’ve realized that it’s a good thing it isn’t. I completely agree that college as America used to write application, know it has come to an end, but I believe that schools have changed for ways the better. The problem I had when I quit school the first time around was that I never adjusted to how schools have changed. I dropped out because of my mislaid expectations; the same ones that Rick Perlstein is nostalgic for.

I’m going back to school because I’ve realized what the college experience is like today and I’m now more than prepared to abuse it. Like nearly everyone in my graduating class, I attended higher education because that’s what we did next. College seemed more like 13th grade rather than a place where I would be opened up to radical people and ways of thinking. I spent my freshman and sophomore years doing what I needed to do to get good grades because that’s all I had done since kindergarten. And even though I worked hard to earn a 3.7 GPA, I dropped out of New York University because of a complete lack of passion for what I was studying (journalism, via process of elimination). Travis Weinger , 21, is a senior majoring in is a letter of intent as a personal statement history, with a concentration in war, revolution and social change. Both Ways? His minor is political science. He is a founder of the Triton, a newspaper at UCSD, and of the Symposium, an on-campus discussion group. Rick Perlstein’s article, boiled down, is simply an extended version of the bitching that every generation hears from the one that preceded it: “Back when I went to write college, school, we walked uphill in the snow both ways…” In sum, college mattered back when Mr. Perlstein went to it because that was when he went to it.

Since college has changed from when he remembered it, he wants us to believe that it has somehow degenerated into look both ways essay irrelevance. The vast majority of college Perlstein’s complaints fit under the above rubric. Look On Film Techniques? Our college experience is not as liberating as his was (no longer can we simply phone public intellectuals and bully them into letter the same as a visiting our dorms). Our activists are not as radical as his were (we don’t take over enough buildings). Ways Essay? Our connection to argumentative essay pro choice, the Sixties isn’t as strong as his was (our band members aren’t former revolutionaries). We are not as alienated from society as he was (we engage our world, not whine about it). Both Ways Essay? Perlstein’s claim that his experience was in some way both richer and harder than the next generation’s is an argumentative essay old one, and is continuously echoed by every generation. Like most complaints of this type, it is largely groundless and mildly insulting. To respond to it bit by both ways, bit would validate his nostalgic whining to a degree it does not deserve. The Cultural Contradictions of American Universities.

For the past twenty to thirty years, we have seen the 6th grade, great degradation of post-secondary education. Look On Film? Conventional wisdom suggests that the problem lies simultaneously within the is a letter the same as a personal, hands of the look both ways, politicians and the students. Is A Letter Of Intent The Same Personal Statement? This narrative does not account for the history of college. Throughout the modern age, the both ways on film techniques, role college played in the national debate was minimal. To this date, there has only been one president with a Ph.D., and both The New Deal and Truman’s Fair Deal did relatively little for college and education in general (with the essay, exception of the G.I. Bill).

And even today, most candidates on both sides of the look, isle have the same prescription for college: the problem is lack of funding, therefore, the solution is to increase funding. It usually ends at that. In order to find the true crisis of college, we must first look at its true purpose. A few months ago, Charles Murray wrote a controversial series of columns in the Wall Street Journal arguing, not that college had been written out of the national debate, but that its role is too great. Essentially, too many people are going to history as level, college who did not need college, but instead needed vocational training. There are serious problems with his logic to be sure, not the least of which is techniques his obvious IQ-ism. While it is true that college is in need of some serious reforming, focusing solely on IQ will not solve them, for coursework IQ is not the only purpose of look ways essay on film college.

For example, there are, what a professor of essay on why like to be mine called, “latent overtones.” That is, those unexpected, and unintended consequences of college learning. Both On Film Techniques? For example, one might discover a great philosopher that he’s never heard of, or another collegiate finds that they enjoy a field of study which they did not expect. But this is, of course, part of the intellectual journey of students. College exists not, as conventional wisdom suggests, to change the culture. In Quality? It exists to create a new breed of look essay intellectuals. All politics aside, students should exit college not knowing simply what to coursework in quality, think, but how to both ways essay techniques, think. This is where Mr. Murray and I agree. He hits the history as level, nail on the head when he describes the ways on film techniques, purpose of college, that college is created to train the elites to argument essay, do their jobs.

However, this purpose has been lost in a quagmire of watered-down curricula and fluff courses. And this brings us to the real problem of college: the searing anti-intellectualism of the youth. Education is the single most important factor in the growth of look ways our country. Specifically, higher education paves a future and provides opportunity for students that attend college and gives them a shot at a career. 50 years ago, college was strictly for the elite, high class Americans. Now, it seems that every common household has at least one family member attend college. But with the increasing drop out rate today, students seem less interested in with write essay great learning at college and their priorities change from their original goal of both essay graduating. The importance of education today is a growing factor because the future of this country depends on the students in college today. College is history essays misunderstood by many incoming freshman.

All of the look ways, television advertisements and billboards encouraging students to attend college are used as bait to reel in student’s tuition. Parents encourage their kids to attend college after graduating high school because they want to see their kids have a shot at success. However, college is not cut out for everyone. Is A Letter Of Intent The Same As A Statement? More freshman than ever are dropping out both ways on film techniques, after their first year because college can be overwhelming through everything that takes place within campus boundaries. The pressures of college whether it’s to impress parents or maintain a high GPA grasps hold of many students while they are in college, freezing them from work and history, attending class regularly. Back in the 50’s and 60’s when college was becoming so popular, people attended college solely to improve their education and learn through the college experience, in hopes of obtaining a career after graduation. Now, people attend college because their friends or girlfriend go there. Many people attend college just to party as much as possible. College can be misleading for teenagers fresh out of high school, and people who feel that continuing their education isn’t the most important factor in attending college should not apply. College matters because without a thoroughly educated society, America would fall to its knees and both essay on film, regress into deep depression.

Jobs would flounder because the people applying for them wouldn’t get accepted without college degrees. Pat Brown expanded university development in California in write college application 1966 to encourage people of every social class to look both ways essay, attend college and coursework, gain a higher education. The reason for his rapid expansion was because the number of college students doubled from 1957 to 1967, and Brown decided in order to improve society and keep America running, more universities should be built to essay on film, attract new students. However, in 1997, only argumentative essay pro choice 54 percent of students that attended college as freshmen graduated with a degree six years later, 30 percent not even finishing their freshman year. Once students enroll in college, dropping out is the look both essay on film techniques, worst decision they can make.

The opportunity cost of dropping can be detrimental to a student’s financial standing. Dropping out also means dropping tuition, and students are often left with debt to pay off depending on which year they dropped out. Entering in a low paying job, drop outs must slowly pay back student loans, which is why college is so important to stick to of intent personal, and graduate once enrolled. The likelihood of students being able to pay off student loans quickly after graduating is much greater than the likelihood of both ways essay on film techniques a drop out as level essays, paying off loans. Look Both Ways Techniques? Drop outs sometimes will only history essays make enough money per paycheck to pay off previous college debts, not leaving any left over cash for leisure activities.

Once choosing the decision to attend college, remaining in college is the most important decision a student can make, in look both ways order to avoid living a below average lifestyle. Young adults are fed by change. No matter how resistant or welcoming I am to change, when all is said and done change sustains me. Two years as an undergraduate student at Fordham University have been made slightly easier by knowing this about rubric 6th grade, myself, because college means change. Even with the still shrinking cyber community and look essay, the ‘real world’ opportunities offered to many young people today, nothing can replace the rush of argumentative essay change attached to the college experience. College students are encouraged to make noise. Ways On Film Techniques? When interviewed by Rick Perlstein for an article entitled ‘What’s the Matter With College” students were very vocal. Hamilton Morris, a New York bred college student, described a college experience where many students hate school “with a passion” and “don’t leave”.

Perlstein writes that Morris’s feelings are proof of a “culture of argument essay rubric enervation” which overwhelms many campuses today. Instead of seeing what Perlstein describes, students without hope or the will to pursue their studies, I see Morris as describing a culture of restlessness. Look Ways On Film? Students who claim to hate college but still do not leave are experiencing a kind of restlessness which comes with the essay pro choice, package. Students experience change so quickly–changes of passions, opinions and interests. They are bound to become restless, especially when the off-campus world is within arm’s length. I often smile to think the world is at my fingertips when I am surfing the internet, but the truth is my fingers are touching my keyboard, and I am planted in my kitchen chair drinking Diet Coke. College offers me the opportunity to shake hands with the leaders of business, art, science and medicine–something the internet can not give me.

College professors do not want students to be excited about look both, school and theory alone–they want them to take their passion into the world beyond the campus. I am not writing this commentary for my school newspaper. I am writing it for New York Times Magazine, a publication Journalism majors like me aspire to work for. History Essays? College urges me to aspire, to voice my opinions, and yes, to change. The problem with colleges in the 21st century is convoluted with many deciding factors, resulting in look both ways essay on film techniques a more complex position for current college students to experience, unlike any previous generation of college students. In my opinion, being a college graduate student and one who has been involved in my school, I can honestly say that the biggest problem with our generation is the sense of nihilism, which is plaguing the our very core of help with application great our being.

It is important to look essay on film, realize that this comes not only from write application college campuses, but the society in general; people just don’t care. If they do care and on film, want to be involved, societal pressures, mostly economic, is what keeps them from being invoked with the history, spirit of the previous generations. There seems to be no sense of both urgency when it comes to our generation. Nihilism will do that to everyone. I also find it interesting that the people who do want to be involved do not necessarily know what to write application essay, get involved with. In the 60s, it seemed to be clear cut what the problem was; racism, sexism, or the war in Vietnam. A contrast between the 60s generation and both essay on film, us now is that people do not what the problems really are.

The mentality when speaking to is a letter personal statement, college students; they seem to focus more on both techniques trying to get that 80K a year job then the socio-political issues affecting us. It is evident that we value the dollar more so than we value the human struggle. So apathy also plays a role. It is important to essay on why i would, realize that we must do something, otherwise everyone suffers. Sending your child to college is not an option in American society, and it’s hardly a privilege at that. In today’s fierce and fast paced world it is a necessity For most parents, thought goes into how they will even fund such a venture within the first few months of the child’s conception. Look Ways On Film Techniques? College funds and savings bonds, money from relatives and graduation parties, this all gets stored until an entire portion of is a of intent the same as a personal statement that funding goes towards expensive college visits. Not only does the child want to go to college, that child has picked out look ways essay on film, 10 in which there is an essay on abortion pro choice orientation at each for prospective parents.

They want to see where their money is going, as well as where their child will sleep, learn, and become the successful adult they were meant to both ways on film techniques, be. What is wrong with college? As a successful student at a prominent Chicago school, I, for one, have plenty of opinions on the matter. Let’s look at “our war” by first taking a retrospective glance at Vietnam. My father, a student at the time of Vietnam, was a conservative at a very conservative Indiana school. He still wore his GDI shirt most days of the week and talked highly of the camaraderie between fellow students. There were protests that were actually allowed on his campus. As A Statement? When the students died in the Kent incident he remembers rallies against look essay the war in their honor. He also remembers reading the rubric 6th grade, names of the dead soldiers with the rest of his class, keeping in somber memory the fight his country was in. Bands of students were scared, there was a draft in effect.

Everyone had war on look both on film the mind and as those 18 year olds took on their first years of college, they had a lot more to worry about than where the weekend’s keg party was taking place. They were learning, growing, and forming opinions on the world they were entering by knowing their current events and being passionate about them. Of course, without the internet, their local papers brought them more world events and less Lindsay Lohan. Help College Application Essay Great? Being passionate about the world takes a certain naivety that forms when someone does not already have the opinions of look ways others so easily accessible. The internet has taken so much of this away from current students.

In my experience, you only have to make a choice on which websites to read. Looking at essay on why like to be, our war today, many students walk away from it, choosing not even to recognize that it affects their daily world. There are many more cliques, many more places to falter, and many more reasons not to care. Hold a pen in front of you and look both ways techniques, look at it; notice its size and rubric 6th grade, color in particular. Now, slowly move it away until you have your arm fully extended. Notice anything different? Probably not, and that is how it should be. Look Ways On Film Techniques? If we remember back to middle school science class, color is partially dependent upon in quality the angle that light hits an object.

But we just moved an object, causing the angle to change from our perspective, and did not notice any change in color. The pen also moved further away without any apparent change in size. I forgot the ways, intricate details that explain why this happens, something to do with a portion of the brain that keeps our perceptions fluid . What I do remember, and as level essays, will never forget, is how cool this all seemed and ways essay techniques, how much more there is to the world when you get past the surface. College is a pretty different place today than it was for my parents thirty years ago. Then again, so were the two worlds in argumentative on abortion which we were raised. Most kids in my generation were not raised in the Sandlot. We did not hang out at both essay on film techniques, the malt shop after school.

And we definitely did not attend any sock hops (or if we did, best believe we did not call them that). Instead, we started out playing on help college application essay jungle gyms with woodchips and protective rubber flooring underneath. Eventually, we found ourselves being chauffeured to organized baseball practice, in a minivan. By high school, the importance of getting into a good college had been seared into us and serious attention had to be allocated toward after-school activities and other kinds of enriching events to make sure that we were “well- rounded”. Here’s a fun game that anyone my age can play: ask your parents what they got on their SATs. If they can, you win! Basically, it is like hitting the lottery, since your parents have to be like one out of a million.

High school students in the 60’s did not pay $1,000 for an SAT class and techniques, definitely did not go to any Independent College Consultants. As Mr. Perlstein stated, college was seen as a place sort of essay i would apart from the rest of the world. Look Both Ways On Film Techniques? Kids went there and were met with new people, ideas, and situations. Back then, as I understand it, college was not seen as a stepping stone or a rung on the ladder. You did not go with the mindset that it was simply a means to help college application essay, end, a place to simply collect good grades and then experience the ‘director’s cut redux edition’ of look ways essay on film college admissions in essay pro choice the form of both ways on film graduate school, an internship or a job. Why College Matters: A Response to “What’s the Matter With College” I suppose I should begin by as level essays, saying that I don’t go to a real college. I mean, I don’t feel like I go to a real college. Look Ways Essay Techniques? I don’t take real classes. With Application Great? I don’t live on a real campus.

I’m a music major and attend the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Peabody is an established music conservatory, one of the schools of both ways Johns Hopkins University (despite what I say about it not being a “real” school). In his essay, Perlstein is making it seem that today’s college undergraduates and the ideals we pursue are somehow deficient. That we’re missing out. He’s especially concerned that we’re nothing like the students of the 60s and 70s. He’s right about that, but that is nothing to be ashamed of. We’re students who want (or carry) the iPhone.

We are environmental activists. We’re more technologically savvy than Perlstein’s generation. We get our information and communicate in a totally different way. We’re amazing jugglers. We’re a new breed. It is interesting to read that the defining issue for the 1966 California gubernatorial race was college. For my sake, and I’m sure for letter personal statement the sake of a lot of my peers, I wish it were still that way. College sounded romantic and fun.

My friends argue that things have changed in on film the past 40 years, and that there are bigger fish to fry. The Same As A Statement? The war, for example. Ways? Making a living once college ends. When they start complaining, however, about classes and stress, I ask them, “aren’t there bigger fish to fry?” at college essay great, which they sigh outwardly, roll their eyes, and on film, throw their hands up in the air. I understand where their frustration lies. We still feel young in the scheme of letter of intent the same things, and not ready to plan out our lives after college. It feels like we’ve been doing nothing but planning since freshman year of essay high school. Who has time to worry anyway? Right now, I am worrying if I have enough money to as level, pay the rent this month. Many of both essay on film techniques my classmates worry how to essay, pay for the next semester. To be honest, when it came to college, most of us never really had a choice.

Where I grew up, in essay on film Greenwich, Connecticut, there was never the option of “college vs. no college.” The choice was “Ivy League vs. state school,” or something along those lines. The whole getting-ready-for-college experience was important. As you thumb these pages, reader, loyal subscriber, conscious citizen with an appetite for inquiry and thoughtfulness, or may I say fellow American, you tell yourself that you want to sample a young student’s intellect. Certainly I do believe that my own college experience has been important, even critical, to my life and to my thoughts here and now, but young and impressionable does not necessarily partner with a tame, meaningful sense of hindsight… My college experience has fostered some growth. But for the nation? Lend me some relevance. Argument? Am I to accurately describe my confusion with you over coffee to tell you how this all breaks down–I fit in the puzzle and I’m one of the corners, right? Politics. We don’t have movements, and we don’t have causes. A choice between higher education and higher purpose has been made; show me one text message, fellow student, that you have wanted the whole country to read.

Children live at school. Especially if they don’t have much of a home life to live in the afternoon or evening, kids live and essay on film, learn at school. College isn’t so different, only first graders aren’t expected to shape up all by themselves when they appear to be wasting time. Oh, college students aren’t either? Pity. I guess higher education isn’t all that important. Maybe the problems of higher education are just fronds atop a mirage of public schooling. Argumentative On Abortion Pro Choice? Talk to Herbert Kohl, Jonathan Kozol, John Taylor Gatto, men who are trying to both essay on film techniques, wake this country up, and is a statement, they’ll show you what’s happening to my younger brothers and sisters.

Content in the shade, college students loaf, while in more dangerous environs, under the ways essay techniques, pretext that they are to learn, children sit down in coursework their desks each morning in the arms of ways essay a crumbling system. In college, we choose to sleep in, not to participate, excel, regress, etc. If higher education is important to the nation, why don’t more people act like it? Better yet, if education is so important to the nation’s future, why is it neglected? Important as it is, I feel proud to argument rubric 6th grade, remember the words of Thomas Jefferson, who often can remind us of politicians’ and citizens’ true responsibilities: “It is highly interesting to our country, and it is the duty of its functionaries, to look essay techniques, provide that every citizen in it should receive an education proportioned to the condition and help write college application great, pursuits of essay his life.” He speaks to the politician, tells him to take a good look at his fellow Americans.

What sort of education will he provide to match the condition, the quality of life? If the quality be poor, will he stick to coursework, poor schooling until lifestyles rise to the occasion? Try downtown Anywhere, where elementary schools have been forced to remove social studies and arts in favor of apparently year-round test preparation, for standards in English and mathematics. The “need to know” world and the world of standardization are one in the same, and columns of darkened bubbles are in no short supply, though there’s still a need to live. The Problem with College: Why We No Longer See Ourselves As “Part of” a Community. One anomaly of techniques American society is that our universities play only a marginal role in our culture. In other nations, like France where intellectual life is not centered on their institutions of education, this may come as no surprise, but the virtues of essay rubric 6th grade American universities are indisputable. Academics wonder why they are allowed to be the nation’s intellectual leaders, but not its leaders, or even advisors, in the political or ethical arenas. Some are resentful of the mainstream society, thinking it apostate, as though they were priests of both ways on film some outworn creed, but this alienation, which has developed in coursework tandem with the evolution of academia, did not come because the society rejected the university as a social or moral authority, but rather because the university ran out of the energy it took to function in this role. This occurred, at least partially, because those of us in look both ways essay techniques college found that the values we shared were not strong enough to unite us. From the time of Plato, the history as level, purpose of the university has not been to represent the society or culture in which it exists but to pursue truth.

Most academics, who may disagree on what truth is in essence, would agree that it is a noble and worthy objective. And, since truth is their goal, many of them think themselves justified in being alienated from mainstream society. Essay Techniques? This does not mean their views are homogenous; I can testify that, at the University of Idaho (to name one example), the argumentative essay on abortion, politics of professors in look both ways the College of Business are not shared by the English instructors; but what the two departments have in common is their distance from America’s political center. This is on why i would like to be largely because specialists in any field, whether that field is philosophy or political science, tend to feel invalidated if anyone could reach the same conclusions that they do. It is a telling fact that, at least until recent years, there was a higher percentage of self-described Marxist literary critics than blue-color workers.

Nonetheless, this desire for academic innovation benefits the university in that it makes professors’ research original; it is for this reason that, whenever universities are rated according to prestige, the United States constantly is found to have the greatest number of both ways essay on film prestigious institutions. Even so, there is coursework another facet to a professor’s job, teaching. This requirement creates a dilemma for on film techniques many professors: their strenuous educations and meticulous research has caused many of them to coursework in quality, become opinionated, but, at the same time, they need to look both ways essay, keep their students pacified while educating them in accordance with principles which the students may not share. Thus, they (and the argument, students) learn that it is look both essay on film techniques easier to ignore worldview-related issues. In searching for the least common ethical denominator among the group, the instructors and the instructed clandestinely agree that the values which they hold as specific to of intent as a personal statement, their Weltanschauungs do not apply to everyone, and, if they do, the value of placidity applies even more. Both Ways On Film? As Allan Bloom wrote in 1987, “[A]lmost every student entering the university . . History As Level Essays? . says he believes . Look Both Ways Essay Techniques? . . that truth is relative” (1). Help With Write College Application Essay Great? While this outlook may work in both essay on film techniques as far as it prevents conflicts, it is an ineffective communal bond. This is because the values of the in quality, classroom are provisional and–most students cannot help but feel–artificial. They haven’t the power to look both ways essay techniques, unite the students and help write college application essay, faculty in a community, which requires common interests and both ways essay, mores.

In July, The Magazine published What's the Matter With College, an essay by the historian Rick Perlstein, online and invited college students across the is a of intent the same personal, United States to respond. Some 600 undergraduates did -- many agreeing with Perlstein's assertion that college as America used to understand it is coming to look on film, an end, many dismissing his argument as so much nostalgic pap, still others taking the with write application great, occasion to critique higher education from an insider's perch. To continue the conversation, we're featuring the winning student essay and ways techniques, four runners-up, and posting another 450 of the entries in a searchable format.
